Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to know about what goes into your SheShe Skin products — answered the way a friend would answer them. Honestly, warmly, and without the fluff.
About Our Products
Oh, this is a great place to start. Regular store-bought lotions are mostly water — that's why the bottle is so large and the moisture doesn't last long. A whipped body butter skips the water entirely and goes straight to the good stuff: rich plant-based fats and oils that sink into your skin and stay there.
Our body butters are hand-whipped in small batches until they're light, fluffy, and melt-on-contact smooth. A little goes a surprisingly long way — your skin will feel nourished for hours, not minutes.
Truly handcrafted — no shortcuts, no factory lines. Every batch of body butter is made by hand in small quantities so that quality control is personal, not industrial. We know exactly what goes into every jar because we made it ourselves.
Small-batch also means your product is fresher. You're not getting something that sat in a warehouse for six months.
Most customers find a 10 oz jar lasts 4–6 weeks with daily full-body use — sometimes longer if you're using it on specific areas. Because the formula is rich and concentrated, you genuinely don't need much. A small scoop the size of a marble can cover your whole arm.
Pro tip: apply it right after your shower while your skin is still slightly damp. It locks in moisture beautifully.
Yes — no animal testing, ever. Our formulas are plant-based and cruelty-free. We care about what goes on your skin and about how products get made. Those two things go hand in hand for us.
They do. Because we don't use synthetic preservatives, our body butters and soaps are best used within 12 months of purchase. Stored properly — in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — they'll stay fresh and lovely for the full year.
If your butter ever smells "off" or changes texture significantly, that's a sign it's past its best. But honestly? Once you try it, you won't be letting it sit around that long.
Ingredients & What’s Inside
Our body butter base starts with premium plant butters and botanical oils — think shea butter, mango butter, and other deeply nourishing fats that have been used for generations to soften and protect skin. We add vitamin E oil for its skin-loving antioxidant properties, and for the unscented Bare line, we include soothing colloidal oatmeal for extra gentleness.
Scented varieties use carefully selected essential oil blends — never synthetic fragrance. What you smell is real botanical goodness, not a lab-created imitation.
Essential oils — always. Synthetic fragrance oils may smell great but often contain undisclosed chemical compounds that can irritate sensitive skin. We choose essential oil blends because we know exactly what they are, where they come from, and how they interact with skin.
The result is a scent that's more subtle, more natural, and more breathable. It won't knock you over — it'll just make you feel good.
Nope, nope, and nope. We specifically formulate without parabens, phthalates, or sulfates. Those ingredients are commonly used as preservatives and foaming agents in mass-market products, but they've been linked to skin irritation and other concerns. We'd rather leave them out entirely.
What you will find: clean, purposeful ingredients that your skin will actually thank you for.
This is such an important question and we're glad you asked. Shea butter comes from the shea tree nut, and while many people with tree nut allergies tolerate it without issue (the protein content is very low in refined shea), we always recommend checking with your doctor or allergist before use if you have a known tree nut sensitivity.
When in doubt, do a small patch test first — apply a tiny amount to your inner wrist and wait 24 hours. Your safety always comes first.
Our body butters are formulated for the body — they're rich and occlusive, which is wonderful for elbows, knees, legs, and arms. For most people, using them on the face may feel too heavy and could clog pores, especially if you're acne-prone.
That said, some people with very dry skin love using a tiny amount on dry patches like the lips or around the nose in winter. Listen to your skin — it knows.
The Scent Families — Finding Your Match
Think of it less like choosing a scent and more like choosing a mood. Here's the quick guide:
- SheShe Bare — No fragrance at all. Just pure, clean nourishment. Perfect for sensitive skin, pregnancy, or anyone who simply prefers unscented care.
- SheShe Calm — Soft lavender and warm sandalwood. This is your wind-down-after-a-long-day scent. Bedtime routines love Calm.
- SheShe Glow — Bright citrus and bergamot. Light, uplifting, energizing. Great for mornings and anyone who loves a fresh, sunny mood.
- SheShe Fresh — Eucalyptus and rosemary. Clean, spa-like, herbal. It's the one that makes your bathroom feel like a retreat.
Not sure? The bundle sets let you commit to one scent family across butter and soap — a great way to fully experience a scent before you mix and match.
Intentionally subtle. We're not trying to be your perfume — we're trying to be your ritual. The essential oil blends are present enough to be lovely and sensory, but they fade gently rather than announcing themselves. You'll notice the scent most right after applying, then it softens into a quiet warmth on your skin.
If you love fragrance, you'll enjoy layering with your favorite perfume — they complement rather than compete.
Skin Types & Sensitivities
Start with SheShe Bare — full stop. It's fragrance-free, formulated with calming colloidal oatmeal and vitamin E, and designed specifically to nourish without irritating. It's also our most popular choice for people with eczema-prone or reactive skin.
Once you've established how your skin responds to the base formula, you can experiment with the scented lines if you'd like — Calm tends to be the next gentlest, as lavender is well-tolerated by most sensitive skin types.
We'd always recommend checking with your OB or midwife first — everyone's pregnancy is different. That said, SheShe Bare (fragrance-free) is the most straightforward choice during pregnancy, as it contains no essential oils, which some practitioners suggest avoiding in high concentrations during the first trimester.
Our scented products use essential oils at body-care-appropriate levels, but again — when pregnant, your provider's guidance is always the right call.
A little absorption time goes a long way here. Apply and give it 3–5 minutes before getting dressed — your skin will drink it in. If you've been using watery lotions for a while, a rich butter can feel different at first, but your skin adjusts and you'll likely find you need less over time as it becomes better hydrated.
The key is applying a small amount — you really don't need a lot. Less is genuinely more with a whipped body butter.
Soaps & Massage Bars
Great question — they look similar but do different things.
The artisan soap is a cleansing bar. It lathers, it rinses clean, and it's made with gentle plant-based ingredients that clean without stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Think of it as the "wash" step of your ritual.
The massage bar is more like a solid lotion bar. It doesn't lather — instead, it melts on contact with your body heat to release a blend of conditioning butters and oils. Use it to massage into skin after your shower, focusing on dry areas like elbows, heels, and knees. It leaves a subtle, satiny finish.
Yes — a satisfying, creamy lather that feels luxurious rather than squeaky. It won't produce the aggressive foam of a sulfate-heavy commercial soap, but that's actually a good thing. Big harsh lather strips your skin. Our gentle lather cleans it.
The difference is especially noticeable in winter when commercial soaps leave skin feeling tight and dry. Our artisan bars leave skin feeling soft even before you moisturize.
Gifting, Bundles & Shopping
They are one of the best gifts you can give someone, honestly. Not because we're biased (okay, maybe a little), but because a curated self-care set sends a message that says "I thought about you, I wanted you to feel good." That lands differently than a generic gift card.
Each bundle pairs a body butter with either an artisan soap or massage bar in a matching scent — so the recipient gets a complete ritual, not just a single product. They're great for birthdays, holidays, baby showers, "just because" moments, and the always-important "I deserve this" self-gift.
Welcome! Here's the honest new-customer guide:
- If you have sensitive skin → start with the Bare Bundle (fragrance-free)
- If you want something calming and relaxing → go Calm Bundle (lavender + sandalwood)
- If you want something uplifting and fresh → try Glow (citrus) or Fresh (eucalyptus)
- If you just want the body butter alone to try first → grab any single butter at $12 — it's the heart of the line
However you start, you'll know pretty quickly which scent becomes your signature. Most customers end up with a favorite and come back for it regularly.
Keep your body butter in a cool, dry place — a bathroom cabinet or bedroom shelf is perfect. Avoid storing it in direct sunlight or anywhere that gets very warm (like a hot car in summer), as the butter can soften or separate when exposed to heat. If that happens, it's still usable — just stir it back together.
For your soaps and massage bars, let them drain and dry between uses. A soap dish with drainage holes is ideal. This keeps them from sitting in water and extends their life significantly.
